Having a racist idiot as President of the United States is not an improvement over business as usual. If you seriously want change, you should be joining those of us who have been fighting for it for the last 40 years:
Constitutional amendments to:
1: End corporate personhood (to get big money out of politics. Permanently, regardless of by what name they call it.)
2: Establish Ranked Choice Voting (To end the winner take all system and end single party politics running DC)
3: Require that ALL members of the electoral college AND Senators be selected by and from the membership of their state legislature (to make them accountable to their state, and make them EARN their position without being able to just buy it.)
4: Make Gerrymandering, the taking of gifts (From anyone other than immediate family members) or promises of jobs (From anyone else) during a term of office an act of high treason.
No matter if its a quid pro-quo or not… if they accept it, it is treason. Period. All that stuff should go into a public trust, the same as gifts to the President by foreign governments are done.
Hammer those four things down into the constitution and I promise you, things will change for the better because you will have something you do not have now: A government that is accountable to the public, and a public that has a voice.
Try thinking things through:
Without corporate personhood, the legal foundation that allows Citizens United to exist is GONE. Without Corporate personhood, the right of a large corporation (like Georgia Pacific) to lobby for and GET the right to dump toxic waste into the rivers and lakes that provide your drinking water (A right which they, in fact, lobbied for and GOT from a Republican Congress) would be GONE.
Without Gerrymandering, or the ability to buy off politicians with promises of gifts or fat cat cushy jobs, the people you vote for suddenly become answerable and accountable to YOU…as well as me, and the REST of “We the people.”
Introduce Ranked Choice voting and suddenly, third parties are getting voted for on a regular basis. They may not win in Congress at first, but as people see them winning small…local elections…they will see that Ranked Choice voting ENDS the “Winner take all” politics of Red vs. Blue.
End Winner take all politics and suddenly… you are moving closer towards what the founders wanted: A separation of powers.
Force people who want to choose the President to FIRST demonstrate that they care about their neighborhoods (by getting elected to the State Legislature) and suddenly, you make the selection of the President based on people who care about their neighborhoods…but, since they also have to convince everyone else in their state legislature that they care about the state as well… the President winds up being selected by an electoral college that puts country above politics.
Force people who want to be a Senator to FIRST demonstrate that they care about their state (not just buying elections, but convincing both the people of their communities AND their state legislature that they put the needs of the state above the greed of Wall Street) and suddenly… you have Senators who are accountable.
Not just to the state, but to their neighbors.
Note: Nothing I’ve mentioned would stop you, or anyone else…or even an entire region of the country from continuing to support and keep Republicans in power. Nothing.
About the ONLY thing these things would do is stop you from forcing greedy, corrupt, underhanded assholes on the rest of us. At the same time, it would stop US from doing the same thing to YOU.
People who support the 2nd amendment seldom know thing one about the reason for the historical origins for a belief in the need to stockpile weaponry as though they are preparing for a war. I do.
Trouble is… both Democrats and Republicans alike run from the facts. Republicans run from the fact that Lincoln committed an illegal and unconstitutional act of war in order to force the south into firing on Fort Sumpter. If we use his “House divided” speech (given a few years prior to the war) as his justification, then it becomes obvious that recognizing the sovereign status of the south…followed by an economic embargo…would have been enough to crush the south within a generation (without ever firing a shot.)
Democrats run from the fact that their party rose to prominence primarily via taxation (invented by the Republican Party), alcohol, and its eventual evolution into the party it has become today…a party which openly opposes the racism it once embraced.
Republicans, on the other hand, ignore the fact that they have and continue to make openly racist statements in order to respond to a base whose parents and grandparents largely fled the Democratic Party after the DNC came out against racism under Truman and LBJ (both of which only became President by accident.)
I do not support any party that does not support states rights, or the rights of individuals. Why anyone would support the Republican Party, which has a long history of opposing the first amendment as well as states rights, I cannot say.
All that I know for sure is that I support changes to the constitution which would increase accountability, reduce corruption, end the “winner take all” political system we have, and open the door to more alternatives.
Why you, or anyone, might oppose these things is beyond me.
News flash: Name calling isn’t an argument.
