Just like Republicans, Democrats have a long history of pushing aside progressives. After roughly half a century of offering up little more than token resistance to the Republican party, the Trump presidency (coupled with the violation of democratic party rules to get Hillary Clinton the nomination) has energized progressives tremendously.
The primary election defeat of a 10 term democrat by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (whose campaign war chest was only a tenth the size of her opponents) sent a message to the party: Its more important that the people like you than that you kiss the right asses in the party leadership.
Since Democrats will probably provide only minor support of her campaign in the general election against what will almost certainly be a well funded Republican challenger, the message is clear. But knowing that it is possible to raise enough money to run for office from small, online donations, only worked in her case because the seat was not being challenged by a Republican.
In the general election, you can bet that there will be a Republican challenger. You can also bet that she will be the target of open and unabashed character assassination. Given recent changes to the law, winning the actual seat may be a lot tougher for her than most think:
The recent decisions re: Union dues by the US Supreme Court (Janus v. AFSCME Council 31 ) ruled that non-union member government employees’ First Amendment rights shield them from having to pay fees to a union to cover costs to represent them. Since this can easily be interpreted to extend to non government employees as well (and will be, as soon as the court finds an excuse to do it) the decision effectively neuters and destroys the ability of Unions to protect minority government employees – like teachers, police, and other first responders.
Without sufficient money to function, much less donate to campaigns, a major campaign contributor to the Democratic party has been defanged. Lets face it: Any Union unable to collect dues cannot function, making the entire United States, regardless of the will of the people, effectively a Right to Work nation under the iron fist of a dictatorship . A nation where collective bargaining is subject to the whims of corporations is a nation where only the corporations have a voice.
In a dictatorship, the ruler is initially a puppet of corporations before greed dictates that he declares himself their master. This means that corporations can and will easily lobby their way into making any attempt at a Strike – being the wrong color – or just being suspected of being LGBTQ – all cause for firing.
The leader always goes along with these things because greater control means increased power. Once that power is gained, the tables inevitably turn and corporations become the mouse instead of the cat. It works the same in any dictatorship.
The Hobby Lobby
Burwell v. Hobby Lobby granted first amendment (and all other rights) to corporations. This means that corporations can fire you for being the wrong religion. If you are an atheist, like me, you’ld better find a way to earn a living online until you can escape to a free country.
The emergence of technological unemployment (growing with each technological innovation) means that an increasing number of non-millionaires will be left without jobs to go to. In an authoritarian dictatorship, such as Trump and his party are building, this increases the number of homeless. Historically, the Republican party has dealt with the issue of homelessness via the practice of poor-shaming (accusing the homeless of being “lazy”).
Now that their dictatorship is all but assured, you can expect the creation of “concentration camps” (or possibly called “Retraining camps”) where the homeless will be worked and starved to death before being turned into soap, lampshades, and other useful products.
When we take into consideration the trade war started by Trump, it cannot be ignored that one of the first casualties in those wars was the nations largest producer of nails. Nails, as you may know, are required for the construction and manufacturing industry…meaning that, within the next quarter (or by the end of the year at the latest) millions in those industries will begin to find themselves out of a job.
In short, thanks to our one party government (which is, as you know, what we have) we can expect unemployment to skyrocket within the next two years.
No politician of either side will be able to change that without making radical changes to the constitution to prevent a return to a one party state. Since the constitution requires a 2/3 majority of the house, senate, and ratification by the states; and since corporations control the media and well beyond that level of representation, we cannot reasonably expect change.
With all this in mind, we must ask ourselves…who will Democrats turn to for funding? Clearly, the only ones left will be the millionaire/billionaire class. The very wealthy individuals and corporations benefiting from a one party state.
The Money Shortage
Since the millionaire/billionaire class is 80% or more conservative, and since the few of those have ever been centrist, this leaves the minority of the wealthy to turn to: The so-called “progressive” rich. How progressive? They have a habit of donating about 1/10th what conservatives do.
What this all adds up to is that its a fair bet that the United States will remain a dictatorship for at least the next 50 years, if not permanently.
The Rise of a Global Dictator
In a dictatorship which requires only a handful of people to be paid off to function, you may be certain of the fact that offers will be made to influence the leadership. It is, after all, impossible to get a man to act like a democrat when his livelihood depends on his acting like a republican. The same holds true when the rolls are reversed, but in a dictatorship – death is often the penalty for disloyalty. Some of us remember the many “leaders” under Stalin and Krushchev who died of “heart attacks” when they dared question their totalitarian leaders. The United States will be no different.
Since Trump is the first president to effectively head a one party state in America who not only ignores the Constitution (he has violated the emoluments clause since the moment he was sworn into office, which is an impeachable offense) …while also being the first president to preside over a party unwilling to hold him accountable for any violations of law whatsoever, we are already watching his power growing on a daily basis. At this rate, Trump will be in a position to declare himself “President for Life” by 2020-2021 and there will not be a single remaining barrier to hold him accountable.
Welcome to the Rise of the First American, and would-be Global Dictator. How do we put an end to his regime? Probably the same way that was required for the last wannabe global dictator. His name was Adoph Hitler, and regime change came at a cost of millions of lives through a political strategy known as World War 2
